COMMERCIAL ITEM DESCRIPTION
EVAPORATOR, ALCOHOL - AIR BRAKE SYSTEM
The General Services Administration has authorized the use of this commercial
item description (CID) as a replacement for MS53067B(AT), which is canceled.
1. SCOPE. This CID covers an alcohol evaporator used in air brake systems. The evaporator
provides a means of inducing filtered air through the alcohol to form vapor for induction into the
air compressor and brake system. The alcohol evaporator is also referred to herein as evaporator.
2. SALIENT CHARACTERISTICS
2.1 Material. The material used to make the evaporator shall be compatible with commercial
grade methyl alcohol (methanol) and shall be corrosion resistant or treated to resist corrosion.
Cadmium plating is not acceptable. The container shall be made of shatter resistant material.
The use of recovered material made in compliance with regulatory requirements is acceptable
providing that all requirements of this CID are met (see 3).
2.2 Design and construction. The assembly shall be constructed so that no part will work loose
in service and shall be built to withstand the strains, jars, vibrations and other conditions in
shipping, storage, installation service, and environment. The configuration and dimensions of
the evaporator are not limited to the construction features other than as shown in figure 1.
2.2.1 Container capacity. The fluid capacity of the container shall be approximately one pint
and shall be detachable by means of a glass jar type screw thread.
2.3 Performance.
2.3.1 Working temperature. The evaporator shall be operable in ambient temperatures of -35 to
+120 degrees Fahrenheit (°F).
